FAO Committee on World Food Security supports work of the International Alliance Against Hunger

Member States meeting at the 33erd Sessions of the Committee on World Food Security of FAO during May 2007 provided once again their support to the International Alliance against Hunger and recognized the need to step-up the work in order to mobilize resources in the fight against Hunger. Over 20 Member States intervened during the plenary discussions in some cases to provide information on the activities of the National Alliances in their countries and in others to express their interest for increased coordinated efforts among the UN food agencies present in the countries.

They consider the International Alliance as an effective coordination mechanism that should be strengthened in order to reach the Millennium Development Goals before 2015. The need for a resource mobilization strategy and for enhanced coordination among Rome based Food Agencies was stressed.

IAAH Secretariat meets the International forum of fisher folks

The International Alliance against Hunger had the chance to meet two representatives of the world networks of Fisher folks during the last session of the Committee on World Food Security in May 2007.

Pedro Avendaño executive director of the World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers and Andy Johnston from the Artisanal Fishers Association that belongs to the World Forum of Fishers Organizations shared information, challenges, and future plans with the IAAH secretariat and possibilities for closer cooperation.

The both highlighted how small scale fishery represents an important livelihood in many low income countries and also how artisanal fishery provides food to local communities representing, in some cases, the only high quality food for poor communities.

The international networks are working hard to have fisheries included in the global agenda of countries when addressing issues related to hunger and poverty reduction. In Latin America several representatives of fisher organizations are providing technical consultation to several governments. Fisher organizations are advocating for an international conference on fishery, similar to the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development held last year in Brazil, in order to motivate the creation of a multi stakeholder dialogue on these issues.

Fisher organizations share with the IAAH the view that political will is a key factor in the fight against hunger and would explore concrete possibilities for the fisher organizations to take part to the IAAH both at international and national levels.

May 2006: Now available tool kit for National Alliances against Hunger

As a follow up to the Handbook for National Alliances published in early 2005 the secretariat of the International Alliance against Hunger is pleased to announce the launch of a new publication called “Organizing for action: a guide for establishing and developing National Alliances Against Hunger.”

Using a modular approach the guide presents various solutions on how to create and support National Alliances and provides practical examples of alliances all around the world. Suggested activities and approaches are included in the publication which can be used step by step or in individual sections.

National Alliances have proved to be effective platforms not only for dialogue between different actors involved in hunger eradication but also for concrete action to achieve food security in various countries over the world. The International Alliance Secretariat has gathered in this publication both best practices and challenges encountered by alliances all over the world in the past three years.

The guide is available in English and will soon also be published in French and Spanish.Download a copy by clicking here.
