First Hunger Summit in the US reflects on solutions to end hunger
The US Alliance to end hunger along with the One campaign to make poverty history and other organizations successfully co-sponsored the first State of Iowa Hunger Summit that aimed towards raising awareness on food insecurity.
The Summit held on World Food Day, 16 October, gathered several hundred leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other groups that lead or participate in projects to confront hunger.
During this first ever Hunger Summit held in the State of Iowa a Luncheon Keynote address was delivered by David Beckmann, President of the Alliance to End Hunger and Bread for the World.
The Summit served as an ideal setting to celebrate the many outstanding efforts of Iowans toward ensuring adequate food for all; encourage them to continue and expand these efforts; and especially to increase state-wide awareness of hunger, poverty, and related issues. It also formed part of a week-long series of events including the World Food Prize, founded by the Iowa native and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug. This year’s prize went to the US citizen Dr. Philip E. Nelson for “his innovative breakthrough technologies which have revolutionized the food industry, particularly in the area of large-scale storage and transportation of fresh fruit and vegetables using bulk aseptic food processing.”
