The real force for moving the International Alliance toward its goals and its hope for the future can be found within the National Alliances. As of March 2009, 94 countries had expressed interest in forming Alliances. Around fifteen had established their national strategy plans and 35 more were moving forward rapidly.
Today 29 National Alliances have been established, and another 10 countries have expressed interest in forming the National Alliance.

Highlights from NAAH

American Chamber of Commerce in Nicaragua (AmCham) promotes School Gardening
The American Chamber of Commerce in Nicaragua (AmCham) has partnered with the Research Triangle Institute/US Aid to promote school gardens aiming at improving nutrition and nutrition education of school children. The programme provides school gardens with agricultural inputs and tools as well as with technical assistance. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aiming at mitigating academic and infrastructure weaknesses of the public education system through partnerships with the private sector.
The AmCham Education Committee has managed to raise funds for promoting “cyber schools” of the poorest areas and has provided them with 310 computers. In addition, the programme has built classrooms and provided food for school children as well as mini libraries, school materials, backpacks, and uniforms.
AmCham raises awareness among businessmen on the necessity of combating poverty through education. It has also campaigned for encouraging children from needy families to attend school

- IAAH consultation meeting in Nigeria: Mr. Raymond Nyayiti Enoch
Civil society representatives meet to create a National Alliance Against Hunger (NAAH) in Nigeria
On February 21st and 22nd the Centre For Environmental Education And Development (CEED), chaired by Mr. Raymond Nyayiti Enoch organized an initial consultation meeting with various national civil society organizations to explore in the possibility of forming a National Alliance Against Hunger (NAAH) in Nigeria. Ms. Adeola Akinrinlola from FAO Nigeria Country Office and Mr. Otive Igbuzor Action Aid Nigeria Country Director supported the initiative and participated to the meeting.
Further 41 participants from 18 States of Nigeria representing farmers’ organizations, environmental organizations, women, youth and development organizations, gathered at the Conference Hall of Youth Aid Organization for Africa (YAOFA) in Abuja Nigeria from to discuss the establishment of the National Alliance Against Hunger (NAAH) in Nigeria.
Participants committed themselves to implement and promote food sovereignty, agro ecology and other sustainable food producing systems, with the aim to strengthening national commitment and action to end hunger and malnutrition. UN system representatives expressed their willingness to support the creation of the NAAH in Nigeria and to actively collaborate with its members on issues related to the reduction of hunger and malnutrition in the Nigeria.

Women from Latin America and the Caribbean play a decisive role on Food Security
Latin America and the Caribbean without Hunger Initiative has been carrying out, apart from some other activities, awareness and communication strategies that promote women’s role on Food and Nutritional Security in their families within the region. Three seminars on transfer of resources within the family and their impact on nutrition have been held in order to analyze women’s role in household economy. The seminars highlighted that women are those who receive the resources and therefore control household expenses. In addition, because of women’s lead on domestic expenses, family diet is more varied and balanced. To read more click here.

Right to Food workshop in Benin
Benin’s NAAH took advantage of the World Food Day 2007 to convene a workshop aiming at defining the main players’ roles in the process of giving legal status to the protection of the right to food and to food security in Benin. These players are the Government’s bodies (Ministries and other administrative bodies, local governments, etc.) ; various NGOs active in hunger mitigation, agropastoralism, human rights ; individuals and international istitutions (FAO, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP…).

Interview with Mr. Etienne Poda, National Alliance Against Hunger of Burkina Faso
The National Alliance Against Hunger of Burkina Faso, through its member organizations, carried on with its advocacy activities on behalf of the destitute. It took part in fora and ad hoc meetings on the food crisis which the Government or Civil Society organizations had convened, and organized along with its partners free distributions of seed and fertilizer for destitute and input-deprived populations, so as to enable them to take part in the current harvest. Many households, as a result, were able to grow food and to shield themselves against food insecurity. To read more click here

Forging alliances, forging ahead against hunger: Regional National Alliances Forum held in Washington DC in december 2008
12 December 2008, Washington, DC – Hunger-fighting groups from seven countries met here this month to share their ideas and experiences in an effort to strengthen partnerships in the battle against hunger and malnutrition.
“Now that the world is faced with a financial crisis and the threat of economic recession in its richer countries, the focus of international attention has shifted away from food-related issues,” said FAO Assistant Director-General Lorraine Williams, Chair of the International Alliance against Hunger.
